History

You’ve Come a Long Way Barton

  • Barton Memorial Hospital opened its doors in 1963

    • Community members gathered support and money to build a hospital

    • The 6-acre site was donated by Alva Barton and Faye Ledbetter

    • The hospital was comprised of:

      • Eight Medical Staff Members

      • Thirty-eight Beds

      • Services Included:

        • Medical/surgical

        • Pediatrics

        • Obstetrics

        • Emergency

  • Barton Memorial Hospital Association

    • The association became a key to the early fundraising success of the hospital

    • Association members:

      • Had the right to r un for a board position

      • Vote for the board of directors

      • Meet annually to ratify the Board's actions

    • This organization requires a $1,000 membership fee

  • Growth in the 1970's

    • Wings were added to the hospital

    • 20 Beds were added to the hospital

    • The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) was completed, adding 9 more beds

  • More in the 1980's

    • Another 19 beds were licensed

    • The Ambulatory wing was completed

    • A pharmacy, a gastroenterology lab, ultrasounds, real time sonography and the computer axial tomography were added

    • The radiology expansion was funded by Elvis Presley in appreciation of his mother's care at Barton

    • The first alternative birthing room was financed by Bette Midler and Harrah's Casino

    • An outpatient clinic on the Nevada side opened for Urgent Care

  • Into the 1990's

    • Many specialty physicians had joined the staff

    • New technology was added for medical imaging, the laboratory and surgery.

    • The Barton Memorial Clinic at Kirkwood was established

    • In 1993, Carson Valley Medical Center was built

    • Barton Memorial Hospital became one component of the Barton HealthCare System

    • In 1995, a 60,000 square-foot building opened for acute care, which doubled the size of the facility

    • Mammography, laser technology, nuclear medicine, video systems, X-ray and CAT scan were upgraded

    • The Skilled Nursing Facility opened with 48 beds

    • Barton HealthCare System now encompassed practices for pediatrics, family care and internal medicine

  • Into the 21st Century

    • 71 Licensed Acute Care Beds

    • Medical Imaging becomes filmless and offers numerous specialty procedures for diagnosing and treating ailments

    • The 64 slice CT Scan takes technology in Tahoe to a new level

    • Barton Hospital brings construction up to meet new seismic requirements

    • Additional outpatient services for infusion therapy  becomes a new service line

    • Healing Design concepts transition the patient experience to healing and wellbeing

    • “The Barton Way” Guest Relations program takes customer service to a new high

    • More physician partnerships create a stronger health care system for the community

    • Barton HealthCare System becomes the majority stakeholder in the Lake Tahoe Surgery Center

    • Nearly 1,000 employees work for the Barton HealthCare System in 40 departments and 16 physician offices

    • Stateline Medical Center becomes the hub for outpatient services in Nevada

    • Ski clinics at Heavenly and Sierra at Tahoe provide invaluable mountain services

    • Carson Valley Medical Center grows as the Critical Access Hospital and opens 4 ICU beds

  • In the Works:

    • Semi private rooms are transitioning to private patient suites

    • Quality initiatives continue to improve Barton’s performance expectations

    • Retail health care kiosks will allow patients to order medical products easily

    • Telehealth will bring electronic ICU technology for even greater patient care
