Barton Health participates in several venues to offer information and educational opportunities for those interested in healthcare careers. Below is a list of some of the activities available:

College Job Fairs
Barton attends job fairs on a yearly basis at Lake Tahoe, Western Nevada and Truckee Meadows Community Colleges, as well as other colleges upon invitation. Visitors will learn of the many career opportunities available throughout the Barton Health. -
Technician Assistant Program
This 4-week program is offered each summer and is available to graduating high school and college students interested in pursuing a career in healthcare. Students work with preceptors in 12 clinical departments to obtain exposure to a wide array of career opportunities. - Phlebotomy Program
This program is offered annually through Lake Tahoe Community College. Instruction is offered by Barton staff. Certification can be obtained by passing a state sponsored exam. -
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Program
This program is offered once a year at Lake Tahoe Community College in the fall quarter. Barton provides staff and funding. -

Due to our very low vacancy rate, Barton will not be holding the New Graduate Nurse Program in 2010 and have yet to determine if we will be holding a class in 2011. Additional information about a possible 2011 class will be available in the spring of next year.
This 6-month, structured & supportive program is designed to meet the needs of the new Nurse with less than one year of work experience as a Registered Nurse and to facilitate transition from student to staff nurse.Program includes:

5½ days of Nursing/General Orientation
-
6 weeks of guided clinical Preceptorship in the Medical/Surgical & Orthopedic Units
-
4½ months of Internship
-
30-40 hours of class time
-
Small group setting allows opportunities for each Graduate Nurse to increase his/her skill proficiency in a supportive environment

Program Procedure:
- Hiring
Candidates must have a current and valid Interim Permit or RN License before starting the program. Eligible candidates for the Graduate Nurse Program must complete an employment application, meet the same hiring criteria as for all employees and schedule an interview. An Employment Agreement will be completed at the time of program acceptance. -
Evaluation Upon Program Completion
The Graduate Nurse’s success in meeting the objectives for the program is based on:-
Written evaluation by the Graduate Nurse of class time content and clinical experiences.

Successful completion of the formal program (30-40 class time hours) and of clinical preceptorship.

Daily Feedback Form, completed by the Graduate Nurse and preceptor at the end of each shift, identifying learning needs and measuring progress in skill development for that shift.

Informal meetings between preceptor and Graduate Nurse to set goals and evaluate progress.
-
Satisfactory score on the probationary three-month Performance Evaluation and on the Annual Performance Evaluation.

This program is offered one time each year, beginning in late spring or early summer.
