Youth & Young Adult Opportunities

For A Future in Healthcare

Today, the nursing shortage problem spreads across the country, and in Tahoe there are no exceptions. However, at Barton Memorial Hospital we are preparing for tomorrow. Beginning with children and working our way up, we offer numerous programs that introduce and educate our community about healthcare and its employment opportunities. The following programs are offered through Barton Memorial Hospital.

  • Third Grade Education
This program is offered to every elementary school in the Tahoe Basin. This field trip educates children about healthcare opportunities and allows them to become comfortable inside a hospital setting. Coordinated with their science curriculum in October, the children are introduced to hands-on activities in clinical areas, a tour of the helicopter, presentations by clinical staff and an overall awareness of hospital employment possibilities.

  • Seventh Grade Healthcare Career Lectures
Offered to STMS and Whittell, this program introduces students to the opportunities, salaries, and educational preparation of healthcare professions. Coordinated with their human anatomy module in March, students listen to lectures, watch videos and demonstrations from clinical staff members in different departments.

  • Job Shadowing
This program is offered to both Middle and High School students who have expressed an interest in the healthcare field. School counselors coordinate with each individual to meet their needs.

  • High School Career Days
Offered to both STHS and Whittell H.S. this program sends a representative from Barton into the school to talk to the students, encouraging them to ask questions and learn more about the healthcare field.

  • Senior Project Site
This program offers any hospital department as a site for a high school senior with a healthcare related project.

  • Junior Volunteer Program
This program is offered to high school students who are interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare field. The students spend 2 hours per week in a 10-week program rotating through different departments in the hospital, learning about the medical field.

  • Technician Assistant Program
This is available to graduating seniors who have been accepted to college and are interested in a career in healthcare. Students are rotated through the clinical departments of their choice during a 5-week program.

  • Lake Tahoe Community College Internship
College credits are available through this program, which allows students to rotate through clinical and non-clinical departments of their choice.

  • College Job Fairs
Barton attends job fairs on a yearly basis at Lake Tahoe, Western Nevada College and Truckee Meadows Community College, as well as other colleges upon invitation. Visitors will learn of the many career opportunities available throughout the Barton HealthCare System.

  • Community Forums
Coordinated with Lake Tahoe Community College, representatives from Barton present information about their careers, salaries and educational preparation to adults who are interested in considering a career change into healthcare.
