Barton Memorial Hospital is accredited by The Joint Commission and licensed by the state of California. Our Emergency Department has 12 beds and the patient volume seen is 19,500 per year. The hospital has 71 beds, which includes an 8 bed ICU.

Barton’s Emergency Department medical team provides treatment and care for:

- Acute respiratory distress
- Acute abdominal pain
- Minor trauma
- Stabilization and transport of major trauma
- Post-op infections/complications
- Renal Calculi (kidney stones)
- Diabetic complications
- High blood pressure crisis
- Eye, ear, nose and throat problems
- Febrile illness
- Urological problems
- Laceration repair and wound care
- Broken bones/torn ligaments
- Gynecological problems
- Psychological problems
- Animal bites
- Victims of suspected/alleged elder, child, domestic and sexual assault
- Accidental poison and/or overdose

Patients requiring more advanced medical services can be assured of the highest quality of critical care transport available in the Tahoe area. This is provided for critically ill patients by helicopter transport via Cal Star, which is based at the South Lake Tahoe Airport or Care Flight, which is based in Gardnerville. Stable patients requiring services not offered at Barton can also be transported via ground ambulance with certified Paramedics.
All of our Emergency Department physicians are board-certified in emergency medicine. All Registered Nurses (RNs) in the Emergency Department hold certifications in Advanced Life Support for both adults and children and are licensed as Mobile Intensive Care Nurses (MICN). The majority of our RNs hold advanced certifications in Emergency Nursing and/or Trauma Nursing.
Barton Memorial Hospital has highly-qualified specialty doctors, including Orthopedics, OB/GYN, General Surgery, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Radiology, Podiatry, Dentistry, Rheumatology, Ear, Nose and Throat, Gastroenterology, Psychiatry, Anesthesiology and Hospitalists, which are Internal Medicine physicians with advanced training in caring for critical patients. Our Orthopedic doctors specialize in ski, snowboard, sled and other injuries. Our staff is highly trained and experienced in dealing with all types of high-altitude related illnesses.
