The 2011 Amgen Tour of California, the largest cycling event in America, will start in South Lake Tahoe, one of the country's most spectacular destinations and nationally renowned cycling meccas. Lake Tahoe's first-ever involvement in the race will feature more than a lap and a half around the Lake beginning at the California/Nevada border in South Lake Tahoe, May 15.
The race will wind through 800 miles, traveling between 15 host cities over the course of eight days from May 15-22, 2011, beginning in South Lake Tahoe, home of "America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride." The race will travel through some of the state's most scenic landmarks, with the overall finish in title-sponsor AMGEN's hometown community of Thousand Oaks.
Barton's own Tahoe Center for Orthopedics is an official local sponsor of the upcoming AMGEN Tour of California. Barton Memorial Hospital is the official start hospital for the tour and its riders. "We are looking forward to supporting the racers with medical support during the professional ride as well as the community ride and activities prior to the Tour of California race" said Clint Purvance, MD, Chief Medical Officer.
Tahoe's 10-Day Countdown of events leading up to the start of the AMGEN Tour of California will launch May 5, offering participation rides, expos, bike demos, bike to work week, community and charity events, headliner entertainment, Gala Reception and more.
