WE CAN! stands for Ways to Enhance Children's Activity & Nutrition. South Lake Tahoe's 2010 WE CAN! wellness challenge was created to educate the youth of South Lake Tahoe and to promote children's wellness through fitness activities and healthy nutritional instruction.
According to Olivia Byron-Cooper, Epidemiologist for El Dorado County, "heart disease is the leading cause of death in El Dorado County. El Dorado County also has a 58 percent obesity rate verses a 56 percent obesity rate in California. Obesity is linked to heart disease and diabetes among other health problems. The heart disease rate in El Dorado is at 183 vs. 162 statewide (per 100,000 people.)"
Since South Lake Tahoe is a year-round playground, we envision making the WE CAN! program a year-round project by incorporating winter sports. A current barrier is that winter sports cost more than summer sports and most Latino children can't afford to participate. We could expand the program to include snow shoe instruction, ice skating lessons, safe sledding education and other low cost sports that anyone can do.
WE CAN! is currently a nine week wellness challenge, developed from a collaboration of local agencies: Barton Health, City of South Lake Tahoe Parks & Recreation Department, Lake Tahoe Unified School District, Lake Tahoe Boys & Girls Club, El Dorado County Health Department and adopted from the national US Department of Health "WE CAN" program.
