Barton Health Begins Construction of New Health and Sports Performance Center

South Lake Tahoe, CA – Barton Health staff and community benefactors dipped their shovels and broke ground on the future site of the Robert Maloff Center of Excellence on August 23, 2016.

Approximately 130 invited guests attended the groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday afternoon. Chris Proctor, PT, Administrative Director of Barton Health’s Tahoe Center for Orthopedics, has been coordinating the project and, at the groundbreaking, described how programs in the Center will benefit patients and the community.

“We are changing the face of healthcare in our community,” said Proctor. “We [Barton Health clinicians] are moving from a traditional, reactive healthcare model focused on treating illness to providing guidance and support on the front end with wellness and prevention services… a pro-active model that breaks the mold of traditional medicine and focuses on treating the whole patient, not just the disease.”

Funding for the two-story, 26,000 square foot facility largely comes from two local residents, Lisa Maloff and Dr. Paul Fry.  Lisa Maloff is a longtime South Lake Tahoe resident who made a $10 million donation in honor of her late husband, Robert Maloff.  Dr. Fry, one of the area’s first orthopedic surgeons, passed away last year and donated funds for the Center’s sports performance services, including state-of-the-art hot and cold water therapy pools.

When complete, the Robert Maloff Center of Excellence will serve patients and community members for orthopedics, rehabilitation, sports performance, and wellness services. Alternative medicine options such as acupuncture, nutrition, education classes, meditation, and yoga will be also available for treating the mind and body.

A personalized experience is a key component of the Robert Maloff Center of Excellence. Patients will work closely with a care navigator, a dedicated advocate who will guide each patient through a customized care plan to achieve optimal, safe, and appropriate care. Patients and users of the Center will also have access to a health coach – a wellness mentor to motivate people to make healthy, productive lifestyle and behavior adjustments.

“When I was an ER doctor at Barton Hospital, I saw many patients with acute illnesses and found the best treatment was prevention,” said Dr. Clint Purvance, current CEO and President of Barton Health, at the groundbreaking.  “The Center of Excellence is helping create a paradigm shift that is innovative, addressing potential disease upstream, and delivering care in the form of wellness, prevention, and education.”

The Robert Maloff Center of Excellence will also have space for elite athletes and include national partnerships with the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) and Altis. The new facility will be the first USSA-certified Center of Excellence where orthopedics, rehabilitation, and sports performance training services take place in one location. It will also provide a training site for Altis, an elite coaching and training environment for track and field athletes from 30 countries. Both partnerships will result in sports training programs accessible to athletes of all levels striving to improve performance.

The Robert Maloff Center of Excellence is located on the east side of Barton Memorial Hospital at 2170 South Avenue in South Lake Tahoe. The three-story parking garage, adjacent to the Center, opened this month.  The Robert Maloff Center of Excellence is expected to be complete in September 2017.
