(South Lake Tahoe, CA) A little over a-year-ago, Barton Community Clinic, located across from Barton Memorial Hospital, stood at 4,379-square-feet with a small waiting room and 11 patient rooms. Today, the Clinic stands at more than 7,000 square-feet and 18 patient rooms. The Clinic officially celebrated its expansion, remodel and re-opening its doors to the public with a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house, including free health screenings.

The clinic primarily serves the south shore’s uninsured and underserved population. Some of the services include physical examinations, diagnosis and treatment of acute health problems, orders, lab work and X-rays, well-child care check-ups, specialty care and other necessary treatments.

Barton’s, Vice President of Nursing, Mary Bittner, D.N.P., R.N., C.E.N.P., gave the opening speech and explained Barton’s future commitment to utilizing the facility to create a patient centered “Medical Home” model. She explained the “Medical Home” will be a place where patients can be treated as well as encouraged to take a proactive approach to their overall wellness – through preventative care and chronic disease management.

“This newly remodeled facility will help us to create a patient-friendly healing environment that will take us one step closer to building a healthier community here in South Lake Tahoe,” Bittner said.

Funding for the clinic expansion came from the Barton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary who raised nearly $800,000 for the Clinic from their services such as the Attic Thrift Store and Barton Memorial’s Gift Shop. Barton Foundation generated nearly $140,000 from their fundraising efforts through their annual Festival of Trees and Lights and other donor opportunities throughout the last several years. Bittner explained that with the expansion and remodel of the facility, it will soon have a new name.

“Thanks to the generosity and support of Barton Auxiliary and Barton Foundation’s fundraising efforts, we are able to offer this beautifully remodeled and expanded 7,000 square-foot facility that will carry with it a new name … “Barton Community Health Center,” she said. “The new name better describes Barton’s mission and the facility’s role in providing a proactive health center and medical home for our community’s overall health. With the Affordable Care Act, it is critical that health care remain accessible to our uninsured, government insured and under-insured population in South Lake Tahoe. Barton is proud to offer this beautiful facility and exceptional staff to our community.”
