APPs: Part of Your Integrated Care Team
Matthew Wonnacott, MD
How advanced practice providers fit into your health journey
An advanced practice provider (APP) is a health care provider who is not a doctor/ physician but who performs a wide range of medical services. Roles may include physician assistant (PA) and nurse practitioner (NP), which, depending on their scope of practice, may be identified as a family nurse practitioner (FNP) or pediatric nurse practitioner (PNP), as well as other licensed nonphysician providers, including certified nurse-midwife (CNM) and others. APPs at Barton Health are overseen by our board-certified physicians.
Like physicians, APPs can:
- Evaluate patients
- Order tests
- Diagnose conditions
- Create and manage treatment plans
- Write prescriptions
“Health care’s growing list of acronyms may be confusing, but just remember, there are entire teams of specialists supporting your health. Our APPs and physicians are vital parts of the multidisciplinary teams caring for our patients, and these teams take great pride in playing a part as your family’s trusted health partner.”
