Snow Excuses: 4 Fun Activities to Get Your Kids Outdoors

Author: Sarah Bourne, MD

Even when the temps are low, children — and grown-ups, too — still need exercise. In fact, kids should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily, regardless of the weather. These activities can help children break a sweat and find some winter fun.

Follow the Lights

Go for an outdoor trek after dark and seek out some sparkles. Watch the snow glisten on a neighborhood walk or download the Tahoe Trail of Lights map to find local holiday displays.

Play in the Snow …

The “usual” favorites are always a hit — making snow people, building snow castles, or crafting a snow fort. Take it to the next level with an animal-track race. Challenge each family member to travel from the start to finish line using a different animal track pattern. For instance, prowl like a bobcat, waddle like a penguin, or hop like a rabbit.

… Or Throw It

Set up a cardboard cornhole board with different holes worth different points, or see who can throw the snowball the farthest or knock a snowball off a cone or golf tee.

Slip on Some Skates

Glide and skate around at the local ice arena or on one of the outdoor ice rinks.

Remember to take a few basic steps to keep everybody safe. Dress in several thin layers, and add boots, mittens or gloves, and a hat. Take frequent breaks to go inside and warm up.
