Addiction & Recovery

Addiction and recovery services are available through the Barton Community Health Center to the greater Lake Tahoe community, experiencing addiction to opioids, alcohol, and other substances.

The medications for addiction treatment (MAT) program at Barton Community Health Center includes medication, referrals with addiction counseling, and peer support coaching services in support of recovery.

Our Services

  • naloxone (NARCAN®) distribution

What to Expect

Under the care of our addiction medicine specialists and primary care teams, patients are supported in their recovery regardless of where they are in the process.

For patients suffering from opioid use disorder (e.g. addiction to heroin/fentanyl or other opioids, including pills) or alcohol use disorder (e.g. alcohol addiction or alcoholism), medications such as buprenorphine (Suboxone, Subutex, Sublocade, Brixadi) or naltrexone (Vivitrol, Depade) may be prescribed may be prescribed to assist with recovery.

Our Emergency Department and inpatient services also provide evaluation for and treatment of substance use disorder for patients experiencing medical emergencies or requiring hospital admission. If you feel you are suffering from a medical emergency related to substance use, the Barton Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day.

Life-saving Naloxone (Narcan)

Naloxone is a life-saving medication that can reverse an overdose from opioids — including heroin, fentanyl, and prescription opioid medications — when given in time. Naloxone nasal spray is easy to use and small to carry. 

Narcan is available to pick up for free at the following locations:

  • Barton Health

    • Barton Urgent Care & Barton Primary Care at Stateline: 155 Hwy 50 #100, Stateline, NV
    • Emergency Department lobby: 2170 South Ave., South Lake Tahoe, CA (located at the rear of the hospital)
  • Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless: Office at the Red Lodge, 1137 Emerald Bay Road, South Lake Tahoe, CA (Monday, Wednesday and Friday)
  • El Dorado County Behavioral Health Services: 1900 Lake Tahoe Blvd, South Lake Tahoe CA (Monday-Friday)

Area Medication Take-back Programs

Medicine take-back options are the best ways to safely dispose of unused/ expired prescription and nonprescription (for example, over-the-counter) medicines. All of your medicines dropped off at the take-back locations will be destroyed.

Before disposing of prescription medicines, remove any personal information from the packaging.
