Barton Health Community Benefit Report

Barton Health, Barton Memorial Hospital and our affiliated physician offices are continuously striving to provide high quality medical services to our patients in the Lake Tahoe region. In addition to the quality care we provide, Barton Health embarks on numerous community wellness programs every year, in addition to providing funding to local organizations and programs through Barton Foundation health grants and Barton Auxiliary scholarships.

Our Community Benefit Report details the programs and support services Barton funds to build a healthy community in South Lake Tahoe. Focused on access to care, the report has topics such as patient-centered care, technology, supporting our youth, future goals, financial support, and community wellness.

Message To Our Community

Providing safe, high-quality medical care is our mission, but we’re proud to play a larger role in our community too. As a standalone non-profit health system, Barton Health invests in our team and programs to ensure we achieve excellence in care, as evidenced by our consistent quality accolades including our recent 5-Star Overall Rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid and our seventh A Grade from The Leapfrog Group. In 2020, our own investments into the latest medical technology and equipment, and the continued training of Barton team members, allowed us to rapidly respond to COVID-19 when it was still an emerging global threat and source the needed supplies, personal protective equipment (PPE) and staff to meet a potential surge of patients.

Additionally, our presence and ongoing goal of remaining a locally owned and managed health system registers a positive economic impact in our region. Barton Health employs approximately 900 people- our team is made of our family, friends and neighbors. In addition to direct employment, Barton is proud to contract with local services ranging from construction to snow removal.

Barton also offers Financial Assistance Programs, and in 2019, we proudly provided approximately $6.5 million of financial aid to qualifying applicants. This year, in an effort to help more people we’ve adjusted thresholds so additional applicants will qualify for our financial assistance programs. I encourage individuals and households to review our Financial Assistance Programs or to speak to our new Financial Assistance Counselor to learn more.

Like many Lake Tahoe organizations, Barton is unique due to our rural, mountain location. Often, a rural hospital will offer scaled back services, but due to the heavy influx of tourist-related visits, Barton provides a wide-array of services, including specialty services and a Level III Trauma Center. As a standalone health system, we are able to make these decisions independently to ensure optimal health for our community without oversight from a corporation out of the area.

When I think about the local residents, who over 55 years ago, came together to build their community hospital, I am so proud to be a part of their continued legacy. Barton Health provides comprehensive medical services and meets their original goal of limiting trips off the hill for routine medical care, but it’s also grown into a dependable community partner. We look forward to continuing our role as the health leader in Lake Tahoe.
