More Help to Quit

If you’ve tried to quit smoking before without success, prescription medications may help. The FDA has approved medication to help smokers quit. One way the medicine helps people quit smoking is by helping to ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. Another way medication may help is by binding with the receptor in the brain that causes the nicotine craving.

If you’ve thought about quitting or tried to quit before, don’t give up. It can take several tries before you stay quit for good. Medicines may help.

When you’re ready to quit, talk with your health care provider about medication and other techniques that might help. You may also need a support group and counseling to help you quit. Visit the website of the National Cancer Institute or the American Cancer Society for additional help and information.
