(South Lake Tahoe, CA) Barton Memorial Hospital made medical history becoming the first hospital in both Northern California and Northern Nevada to offer da Vinci Single-Site gynecological and general surgery procedures - a specialized surgery performed through the belly button, leaving patients with virtually scarless results.

Gynecologist, John Missanelli, D.O. of Barton Women’s Health, alongside Barton Memorial Hospital’s da Vinci surgical team, led the first Single-Site surgery at Barton Memorial Hospital on Thursday, August 15, 2013.

“At Barton Memorial Hospital, we are truly excited to be a leader today in the surgical treatment of tomorrow,” Missanelli states. “I am ecstatic to be able to offer this Single-Site alternative to my patients through such impressive technological advancements.”

Missanelli is a Senior Robotic Surgeon, certified in women’s da Vinci robotic surgery and has performed over 500 robotic surgical cases. He is a member of the Minimally Invasive Robotic Association and lectures on da Vinci surgical procedures worldwide.

The revolutionary breakthrough of Single-Site allows surgeons like Missanelli to perform a hysterectomy, a procedure where the uterus is removed, through a single incision in the belly button. Single-Site is virtually scarless, instead of several traditional techniques that could lead to multiple, visible scars.

In addition to the new Single-Site hysterectomy, Barton General Surgery has performed gallbladder removal using the Single-Site system, making Barton Memorial Hospital the first hospital in Northern California and Northern Nevada to offer both.

“To be the first hospital in Northern California and Northern Nevada to offer this advanced surgery demonstrates Barton’s commitment in providing our patients with the most advanced medical options,” said Clint Purvance, M.D., Barton Memorial Hospital’s Chief Medical Officer. “Our physicians are among a very small group of surgeons in the region who have received training to perform this type of advanced surgery,” Purvance added.

Potential benefits of Single-Site surgery may include virtually scarless results, minimal pain, low blood loss, fast recovery, a short hospital stay and high patient satisfaction.
