Tahoe's Medical Wilderness Adventure Race (MedWAR) Registration Open

(South Lake Tahoe, Calif.) – Outdoor adventurists can now register for the 4th Annual Tahoe Challenge Medical Wilderness Adventure Race (MedWAR), sponsored by Barton Health. On September 21, teams of racers will mountain bike, kayak, trail run, and navigate to checkpoints containing wilderness medicine scenarios and questions. Barton has worked closely with the U.S. Forest Service and Emerald Bay State Park to plan the 25 mile course that highlights the natural beauty of Lake Tahoe. Registration and more information is available at bartonhealth.org/medwar. Online registration is open until August 21.

One part physical exertion and one part wilderness medicine, teams of four will race on a course featuring hands-on scenarios, designed to test their knowledge of wilderness medicine. Teams must successfully complete the scenario and demonstrate all medical procedures before moving forward in the race. Past MedWAR races have involved treating everything from climbing or diving accidents to wildfire burns and altitude sickness.

“Tahoe Challenge MedWAR is a unique racing event that combines traversing the area’s outdoor recreation with an understanding of how to address associated safety issues,” said MedWAR Medical Director, Dr. Terrence Orr.

This adventure race requires physical exertion. While most persons in good physical health should be able to compete, racers should be prepared for potential physical exhaustion. Teams must be entirely self-sufficient during the race: food and water must be carried, and there are no support crews. Expected race finish times are 6-8 hours and racers will cover 18-20 miles. Weather and darkness may play a role, but the race will take place rain, snow or shine.

Early registration is highly encouraged as space is limited. MedWAR volunteer opportunities are available for those ages 16 and over. Teams of four can register at bartonhealth.org/medwar, questions can be sent via email to tahoemedwar@gmail.com.
